What are My Options Regarding Debt?
Do nothing. By not addressing your debt now will cost you more money later.
Your credit cards will continue to accrue interest, late fees and penalties. Creditors
may decide to sue you in court thus adding attorneys’ fees and court costs to
the balances you owe.
Typically collection efforts will continue for six months, in some cases longer
especially if your creditor has sold the debt to another creditor or collection
agency. After six months your account will be written off as a bad debt. If you
have assets such as property or a W2 wage earning job, you are at risk of liens being placed against your property, having your
wages garnished and perhaps even a levy assessed against your bank accounts. Your credit rating will be ruined and what
financing you do qualify for will be at much higher interest rates.

Credit Counseling. While they offer free, competent budgeting advice and charge only a contribution or small monthly fee
their drop out rate is extremely high. Only about 20% actually complete the program. While your payments usually remain about
the same they are able to decrease the interest rate therefore getting you out of debt in a shorter amount of time than if you
continued making minimum payments on your own. Some individuals’ payments actually increase rather than decrease in the
monthly required payment.
The inherent risks are:
• The payoff schedule is grossly underestimated
• Not all creditors participate in these programs
• Frequently creditors are not paid on time, incurring late fees and negative credit
• Participation in these programs are reported on your credit report
